Silent Heartache
It was a beautiful misty morning enveloping all in its breathtaking hue. Oh! What a welcome respite from the stifling heat! Thought Kira to herself. Kira liked a few quiet moments to herself before she took the day by its horns. Literally! As she thought of it. She laughed gently. They lived in a beautiful house by the beach in the land of Greece. Aquamarine water greeted her gently with a smile. She sat on her terrace overlooking the clean shores. Cracking her hot mug of coffee. She inhaled the vapours , closing her eyes to the lovely aroma teasing her nostrils. Her jog on the beach always left her in a good mood. The aftermath of exercising early in the morning. Then enjoying these quiet moments. All her siblings and cousins were busy in their lives. She had the cafe to run and look after her ailing mother. She was grateful for the excellent help and support she had been able to find for her mother.
Kira at a young age, had been saddled with responsibilities. Her father’s untimely demise had forced her to take the helm. Kira did not resent it at all.
But when she remembered the pain inflicted by Arash. It left a bitter taste in her mouth. Something she refused to think about.
Kira had enjoyed the peaceful moments. Time to get ready and check on her mother. As she went towards her room, her mother had just woken up. Giving her a beautiful smile . It instantly lit up her being. She bent and pecked her on her cheek.
After exchanging a few words. She went on to get ready.
Today the colour of the day was peach. She wore a peach sundress with a stylish shrug, designed in a modern art design. Her favourite designer’s collection piece. Gifted to her by her dear cousin, Leila. She wore strapless sandals, pearls decorated her ear lobes. Peachy coral lipstick adding lustre to her glowing complexion. Kira always liked to dress well.
Her cafe was her baby. . She nurtured it with all her heart.
She poured all her love in it. The cafe was lovely, spirited, just like her. Everyone liked the vibe of it .
Kira had a busy day. She was tired by the time she hit the bed at night. Suddenly she tempered, her grandfather had called her. Tomorrow night she was meeting her friends for dinner too.
The loud ring of the alarm woke her up. She shut the alarm wanting to catch up on sleep. She wanted to sleep in a little more today.
Finally she woke up, jumped in for a cold shower to wake her up completely.
Dressing up quickly and hurrying through breakfast she reached the cafe just in time. Once she was settled, her cousin dropped in for coffee and Kira’s signature cherry pie. Kira looked forward to it every Friday. It was a ritual with Leila. Today Kira was trying out a new pie . She had just finished. When she heard a deep husky throaty “Excuse me.” Something gnawed at her, as she looked up from her accounts. Why did this voice sound so familiar.
Then her entire being froze. It couldn’t be him. After so many years. He had a laptop tucked under his arm. The eyes were the same. They had haunted her for years. Being jilted at the altar, literally, 3 days before the wedding he had stood up on her. How could she ever forget it. How?
He introduced himself. Kira replied sarcastically “what brings you here After so many years?”
He replied in his throaty drawl “Still angry, Kira?”
Just then someone called out to Kira. She excused herself and went to sort the matter.
When she came out again. He was way deep in typing. She wondered if he had become a writer.
After that everyday Kira found him at her coffee shop. Kira barely noticed him. Deep down her heart somersaults. But outwardly she had a very poised demeanour.
One evening as Kira sat down with her coffee to sort through her accounts. She noticed him coming and sitting across from her. Her entire being stiffened.
He started without a preamble. “I know you have a right to be angry. Rightly so. But won’t you even ask what had happened for me to have stood you up. I hate to even say those words.”
That’s when something burst out in Kira. “You stood me up. All the vows, the promises of love. The ring you had gifted me with a promise of ‘Forever’. You forgot all that. You didn’t even for a minute think what would happen to me. So heartless and callous.”
In so many years Kira had never shed a tear but that evening, a steady steam kept cascading. Everything just poured out. All the hurt she had bottled up deep within.
Every single thing.
Once she became quiet. Arash gently held her hand. “Kira, anything I say will never be enough. I know it. But I want you to know what happened. My uncle forged documents and forced my father to sign. In his naivety and blind trust, he did. Even the house they were living in. His condition, I should marry his daughter so that the family wealth stayed in the family. We both hated and despised each other. I just stayed with her till I could get back my father’s share and leave them comfortable. I’m divorced for years.
I have nothing to do with the family business. I’m a writer now. Some of my books have done well. My source of income.” When he named the writer, she was shocked. That was her favourite author.
“All I can say is Kira. I’m very lonely. I miss you every second. I have a chest full of unfinished letters, I have written for you and saved. Someday I will definitely make you read. If you say no now, lI truly understand. I’ll nurture the one sided love I hold deep within for you.
I don’t think any woman will measure upto you.
Kira instantly wanted to believe him. Didn’t she still love him? How could she show him her diary which had harboured thoughts only of him. Him. Just him all the time. No other man had measured upto him either. She still decided to wait a bit.
She told him “Let’s take a call after a year”.
I need time. Arash agreed.
He was going to an island called Syros for a wedding. It turned out to be her cousin was getting married to his best friend. He was going to be the best man at the wedding.
They landed at the Island all excited. She was staying at her grandparents huge house adjoining a resort. Let out by her grandparents. He was residing at the resort.
The bridal shower was fun all the way. Followed by the cocktails party. Kira danced till dawn with Arash. Dressed in a snug red silk sheath cocktail dress. She looked stunning. Her hair left loose in wind blown curls. Her eyes accentuated by heavy kohl and her lips spotted a shimmery lip tint stained in a dull red.
The next day was a casual relaxed dinner. Kira was dressed in a golden yellow sequins flowy dress. Skirting her calves . Her hair swept in a messy bun. She was the epitome of relaxation. Arash and Kira spent more time with each other . Next morning a picnic was planned to a beautiful place surrounded by caves and lunch at an alcove restaurant which was known for their authentic Greek food.
Arash Kira had a wonderful time with everyone. Then dawned the wedding morning. Kira was busy whole day.
She wore a beautiful off white dress accentuated by shell pink pearls. She wore the diamonds and pearls necklace and earrings gifted to her by her grandparents.
She spotted a huge pearl ring, her mother’s gift. All in all she looked breathtakingly beautiful. Arash could not take his eyes from her.
Next day most of them left. Kira stayed a day more with Laila, her few cousins and grandparents.
After 3 days she left for home with her mom.
Kira did not remember the last time she had such a good time.
Finally time to get back to reality. Next morning Arash came. He just simply said “I missed you” and went back to his work.
Kira was getting used to his presence and this bothered her. She didn’t want to get attached to him.
Few more months passed. Kira and Arash were spending more and more time with each other.
For Kira’s birthday Arash planned a surprise for her. He booked at her favourite restaurant. She looked pretty in a wine coloured dress. Her skin had a beautiful glow. Was it the glow of love? She wondered.
Arash looked very good himself. After dinner Arash took out a velvet box . A beautiful diamond bracelet sat in the box. He gifted it to Kira. Kira refused to accept it. Arash picked it up and put it on Kira’s slender wrist.
He took out another box. A beautiful Champagne colored diamond ring winked at her. He took out the ring and asked Kira with a straight face “Kira, I don’t need any more time but if you need I’ll respect it, Will you marry me?” a pause
“If your answer is yes. I’ll put on the ring now. But if you need more time, I'll give you the ring. The day you are ready, you could wear it.”
Kira thought to herself. Did she really need time?
Kira’s answer was a YES.
Her one sided love and his one sided love Had Joined and become one till eternity.
